Marimekko - my love for 60 years

When I want something that stands out a little extra. When I want to dress out of the ordinary, then I go to Marimekko. I was just a teenager when they started in Sweden and to my fortune, my Mum was very modern in her fashion thinking. I got many of Marimekko´s skirts and dresses to ware for school.

I remember that my mother bought a meter and a half of the Marimekko fabric: Garden of Eden (see below). She folded the edges carefully and put it up on the wall as a picture. I knew all the figures by heart, and I am sure I was influenced a lot by this childhood picture. This pattern is still sold by Marimekko. Talk about ever lasting quality!

Marimekko is a Finnish company that has designed fabrics and fashion for 60 years. They are particularly noted for brightly-colored printed fabrics and odd beautiful styles, used both in women's garments and in home fabrics.

Marimekko was founded in 1951 by Viljo and Armi Ratia.

Armi asked some artist friends to apply their graphic designs to textiles. In order to show how the fabric could be used, the company then designed and sold a line of simple dresses using their fabric. Eventually Marimekko came to US and Jacky Kennedy and Sarah Jessica Parker, are some of the famous Marimekko's fans.

About Marimekko

Marimekko: Fabrics, Fashion, Architecture (Bard Graduate Centre for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design & Culture S.)
This book, a comprehensive study of Marimekko designs, presents more than 100 examples of the exuberant Marimekko fashions and home furnishings that gave the company a definitive presence on the world design stage. The book considers the history of the company from its foundation up to today and examines Marimekko's impact on design in Finland and around the world. The company's most important designers, including Maija Isola and Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi, their contributions, and their stylistic development are also discussed. In addition, the book examines Marimekko home and office interiors and how they reflected the lifestyle envisioned in Armi Ratia's broad, radical definition of fashion.

My new curtain

My apartment is small. Much of the furniture is white and to put Marimekko´s colorful patterns here will cheer up both me and the rooms. Marimekko has so many really nice kitchen tea towels. I will let them show some how in my kitchen. Just because of the beauty of them.

The birch design from Marimekko is going to be my next curtains. I have a balcony door that needs to be shadowed with a curtain. Can I choose a better one that these wonderful trees? The with is enough for the door, and I will avoid the straight sun shining in.

If I like, I can get shower curtain, towles and pillow cases too in the same pattern. Even a coffe mug I have seen when I browsed for Marimekko.

Marimekko´s clothes for the modern woman

The spring collection of fashion is just like a flower bed. I would love to wear these dresses, skirts and blouses. Marimekko stands for happiness, in my opinion. I don´t say that all the clothes should be from Marimekko. I cannot afford it either, but to add this little extra to your look is what Marimekkos designs are for!

Marimekko´s small tables

These smart bowl shaped tables can be used all over in the home. I will buy a couple and use as extra chairs. I can also use them to put my magazines on or even a plant.

I can use them to store things in too, like toys for my grandchildren or knitting stuff.
Marimekko makes trays too in the same patterns.
